WAP inspired me to quit my job.
You read that right. “WAP” (“Wet Ass Pussy” if you’re nasty,) inspired me to quit my job.
WELCOME TO
CONFESSIONS OF A COPYWRITER!
This is not your average blog.
A blog? People still blog?
People with stories to tell do.
If you’re on my email list, you already know what this show is all about: these are the confessions of a copywriter who did 17 years in corporate marketing and then escaped (barely) to launch into whatever life had to offer next. I am a classic over-sharer. You will get all the juicy gossip about what I’ve seen, done, and experienced.
As a copywriter and now business & wellness mentor, I am here to share it all and support you in any way I can.
I’m taking my weekly newsletter/marketing gossip rag and setting it free.
Thank you for being here.
ANYWAYS… back to the “WAP”.
As I built my confidence and made plans for an eventual exit from my 9-5 last year, I made a kickass empowerment playlist to accompany my journey. I am a BIG BELIEVER in music and how it can change your mood and soothe your soul. I added all the best of the baddies: Lizzo, Britney, Bey, Dua, Cardi B, Megan, Doja, etc. The mix clicked. I strutted around my house, envisioning myself walking OUT that door with swagger, becoming the business owner I always dreamed of. I honestly had very few doubts or worries about it. I was beyond ready.
But it wasn’t until one day at my kitchen table, finishing up a day job meeting when “WAP” came on my speaker. Loud. The windows were open and I’m sure my elderly neighbors enjoyed it, lolllll.
It wasn’t the first time I heard the song, but today, something about these women rapping about their VAGINAS struck me as empowering. Is it one of the most risqué songs ever written? Um, yes. If you are someone who gets a little uneasy with talk of pull out game, kegels and the like, you might not even prefer to listen to it. Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion do not G A F what people think about it, and they went on to create a song about how fabulous their lady parts are.
GOOD FOR THEM.
It got me thinking about patriarchal society. Women have forever been at a disadvantage in life- from the days of being actual property to the wage gap that still mucks up the professional world. But when it comes to SEX and POWER? Well, Cleopatra knew. Maybe Marie Curie did, too. Who knows.
Beyonce knows.
Boy, I'm just playing
Come here, baby
Hope you still like me, F you, pay me
My persuasion
Can build a nation
Endless power
With our love we can devour
You'll do anything for me
But despite all this power and knowledge of what we’re capable of, women are still repressed. They are told to bury their power. They are supposed to cover up their bodies. They are expected to work harder. They are to raise the children and keep the home. They are supposed to be grateful for what they DO have. They are to be grateful for the opportunity to work 40-60 hours AND make sure everyone has what they need: the children, the spouse, the family, the friends. “WAP” reminded me that it’s all a bunch of bogus shit.
Megan and Cardi said- you will get a phone just for photos of my WAP. You will pay my TUITION just to get a taste of this WAP. (Bitch!)
More women are now saying, "you will pay me what I deserve with the time off and flexibility I require.”
Or, “You will respect my contribution, education, and expertise.”
And even, “I will not restrict myself to the jobs, the lifestyles, or the experiences in which I am expected to entertain.”
So as the sun set on my days of corporate life (ps I plan to NEVER return,) I decided- I will NOT go quietly into the night. I will tell the truths of my experiences: the bosses who crushed my spirit and the ones who lifted me up, the salary I earned and the times I was refused growth and advancement, the incredible realizations and total shitshow moments I witnessed.
There is power in my words.
“WAP” made me acknowledge to myself that I am a talented, brilliant, absolutely badass professional woman and I REJECT the expectations and norms of professional society as it exists. I will reach hundreds or maybe thousands of woman and share that they don’t have to settle for ANYTHING. They can take their power- and their WAPs- and get WHATEVER THEY WANT out of life.
Get empowered, baby. This is our story.
Cheers to your WAP.
