Let’s Talk About Money
A lot of people will read this and feel triggered by it, one way or another. I think we need to have a bigger discussion about the illusion of making money online, (or even, IRL.)
I’ll start out by saying, yes- money is energy. Money is a byproduct of something greater, etc., etc. I get all of that. I believe that. And ESPECIALLY as a privileged white girl, I know that this perspective is available to me. For the larger majority of people, money is not something that flows easily and simply because they are “in the right energy” for it. Paycheck-to-paycheck life is still a reality for so many, and it’s not because of anything they’re doing wrong.
If you spend time on any of the social networks, you know the drill. “Make $10k/month in 60 days! Simply follow this framework!” Or, “I make passive income while I sleep just by offering these evergreen courses!”
It’s practically the status quo. And it’s the dream.
Maybe you follow/work with inspirational mentors who’ve gone before you, whom you aspire to emulate-wise people with important messages who are out there doing the thing. They’re just like you, they say. In fact, many of them were worse off than you! (Is it a crucial component of the modern day Cinderella story to have lived in your car, once upon a time?) They have families and mortgages and alllll the same struggles you do.
But now they’re thriving. Multi-six figure businesses. Six figure months. Millionaires.
All they had to do was BELIEVE and RECEIVE. Get out of their own way. Live an authentic life and surround themselves with people doing the same.
(And you can do it too, with 12 small payments of $1111!)
We’ve all heard this, and if you’re like me, you want to believe it. It doesn’t change how you feel about the people you respect, but it also gets old, hearing about how easy it could be for you, too, if you’d just remove your money blocks and heal your inner child.
I’m ALL FOR THIS STUFF. I’ve been working diligently towards these ideals, not to become a millionaire, but to become fulfilled. To become fully myself and offer value and service to the world. I have experienced great shifts and perhaps most importantly, made space in my brain for the appreciation of it all. Example: I write this from my laptop at the marina overlooking Lake Erie. This IS a dream life!
Still, it’s important to me to be totally honest with you. I have been waiting weeks for two specific paychecks to arrive from clients I’ve worked with in an ongoing capacity. The checks aren’t here yet, and everyday that I open that mailbox and see the checks haven’t arrived, I am stressed by it. Today, I’m angry about it.
I’ve invested in myself, my business, and my education more than I can even afford to in hopes that it would push me to the next level- the level where I’m not waiting at the mailbox, continuing to do work for clients who can’t be bothered to pay on time. It’s a frustrating rut.
This is for all the solopreneurs, entrepreneurs, fledgling agencies, designers, or anyone else out there doing all the right things but still waiting at the MF mailbox for a check that will literally pay your bills. It’s hard, and it’s made even harder by watching so many in the online business world roll around in beds of money. (If you follow anyone who is actually doing that shit, unfollow them, immediately.)
You are not lacking. You are not unlucky. You’re not lazy. You’re not perpetuating some kind of energetic block that’s keeping you from financial stability. You’re normal, like the rest of of us. I see you. I feel you. And guess what? I think there are more people anxiously waiting at the mailbox for late payments than we’d think.
I’d like to put a challenge out.
If you are a business owner and you’ve had money struggles, either current or past, talk about them. Your audience appreciates hearing about it. We don’t even need to hear about how you then went on to build a seven-figure, massively successful empire. We want- we need to hear about how you got by. How you kept at it even when it felt like nothing you did was working.
God bless the millionaires, and the boss babes, and the visionaries out there flying first class to their 3rd babymoon or building a dream home or rubbing elbows with all the fabulous, successful world-changers who occupy seats at your table. I’m so genuinely thrilled for you, and I hope to one day have that type of reach and impact.
In the meantime, please know you would serve people just as well, if not better, if you share more about how to keep the fire burning when you’re just waiting for that next chapter to open.
